CERTIFIED PASSIVE HOUSE

The parameters of this project were different: slotted on a narrow Vancouver lot with a frontage of 25’, located in a peat-bog zone where the soils can only be “piled” into to anchor a structure, this project presented a variety of challenges.

Designed by Nick Bray Architecture, this Certified Passive House presented the perfect storm of challenges. It is the only house in the peat-bog zone that has a basement, therefore clever sequencing and waterproof measures had to be planned to ensure that the basement portion of the home would not be breached by the fluctuating water table.

Furthermore, the entire structure needed to be air-tight to meet Passive House requirements, while being heavily insulated to ensure heat was retained.

Equipped with photovoltaic panels on the roof-top, the home does not use any fossil fuels for heating or cooling.
